About us
Wimborne Musical Theatre Society (WMTS) performs major musicals, revues and concerts in and around Wimborne.
We are proud to have won several awards including:
NODA SW Region Award for Excellence - 42nd Street, 2008
NODA Achievement Award - 9 to 5, 2018
The Ovations Contribution to the Community Award
WMTS was formed in 1968 by a group of musical theatre enthusiasts who wanted to pass their love of the medium onto local audiences, and indulge their passion whilst doing it. In those early days, as Broadstone Light Operatic Society, the company mixed pure musical theatre with productions such as ‘Brigadoon’ and ‘The Pyjama Game’ with light operatic and Gilbert & Sullivan favourites such as ‘HMS Pinafore’ and ‘The Mikado’, and themed concerts.
The company evolved over the years and changed its name to Wimborne Musical Theatre Society, but the original aims of the Society remained the same. The Wimborne Tivoli Theatre became the company’s main performance venue for many years. More recently the Society has performed in other local venues as well, notably the Minster Theatre in the Wimborne Allendale Centre and the Hub in Verwood.
Whilst the Society does not have a large membership, it continues to perform significantly ‘above its weight’, with critically acclaimed versions of ‘42nd Street’ (for which the Society won the NODA SW Region Award for Excellence), ‘The Sound of Music’, and ‘The King and I’. More recently the Society has ventured into contemporary musicals such as ‘Sister Act’, ‘9 to 5’ (which, in 2018, the Society’s 50th year, won the NODA Achievement Award), ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, and, in 2023, successfully performed the musical comedy ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’, a long running ‘off Broadway’ show, a series of vignettes about love and romance in all its forms with the audience seated cabaret style.
The Society also enjoys giving back to the community through mini concerts, at Christmas and other times, to residential homes and the disabled groups and in 2023 received the Contribution to the Community Award at the Ovations Awards (where all the local musical societies come together to recognise and reward achievements).
