Kiss Me, Kate is a sparkling, backstage musical comedy that blends Shakespearean wit with Cole Porter's timeless music and lyrics.
The story follows a theatrical troupe attempting to stage a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. At its center are the show's leading stars: Fred Graham, the pompous director and star, and his fiery ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi, cast opposite him as Shakespeare’s battling lovers Petruchio and Katharine. Onstage and off, their tumultuous relationship mirrors the romantic antics of the play — with tempers flaring, egos clashing, and passions reigniting.
Meanwhile, backstage chaos brews with rising young actors Lois and Bill, a couple of bumbling gangsters, and mistaken identities adding to the hilarity. As art imitates life and life imitates art, the show must somehow go on.
With classic numbers like “Wunderbar,” “Too Darn Hot,” and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare,” Kiss Me, Kate is a witty and exuberant love letter to the world of theatre — and to the complicated relationships that unfold behind the curtain.
This amateur production of Kiss me Kate is presented by arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York.
